SAGEX role: beneficiary
Durham University is one of the oldest higher-education institutes in the UK and part of the Russell Group. The university has a staff count of more than 3,000 and around 17,500 registered students. Durham regularly appears in the top ten of The Complete University Guide league table and is ranked a world top 100 university by QS World University Rankings.
Centre for Particle Theory
SAGEX researchers in Durham are based at the Centre for Particle Theory (CPT), one of the largest particle theory groups in the UK. The CPT has won an international reputation for its research, and it unites the theoretical particle physics groups in the Physics and Mathematics Departments.
The centre provides a critical mass of research excellence and aims to foster research into all aspects of theoretical particle physics, ranging from phenomenology to string theory and cosmology, and to educate the next generation of theoretical particle physicists with a comprehensive and in-depth lecture programme and PhD supervision in all areas of the subject. An MSc in Elementary Particle Theory is also provided, which includes a coherent programme of over 200 lectures on topics in mathematical physics and elementary particle theory intended to take students from undergraduate degree level to the frontiers of research.
